SHOMPOLE PHOTO HIDE EXPERIENCE
5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS

TOUR OVERVIEW
Join me for a 5-day deep dive into the art of underground hide photography, set in the heart of Kenya’s Shompole Conservancy — one of the most dynamic and rewarding places I’ve ever photographed.
This is a highly focused, small-group experience designed for photographers who want to push their creativity and technical skills. We’ll spend three nights rotating between two professionally designed photo hides, both positioned at eye level with a wildlife waterhole. From these hides, we’ll photograph elephants, giraffes, hyenas, jackals, civets, porcupines, genets — and if luck is on our side, even leopards and lions — all in low-light, close-range conditions that demand precision and reward patience.
I’ll be co-leading this experience alongside my husband Mark Fernley — we’re the resident photographers behind Shompole Hide and have spent more time than anyone studying its design, lighting systems, and behavioral strategies. We’ll share everything we know about working quietly, efficiently, and creatively in this unique environment to help you produce images that are bold, refined, and deeply personal.
If you’re looking for a quiet, intense, and inspiring space to grow your craft — this is it. I’ll be there beside you, helping you refine your process, adapt to conditions, and walk away with a portfolio full of images you’re truly proud of.

EXPERT GUIDANCE
As your guide and photography mentor, I’ll be by your side throughout the journey — helping you anticipate moments, refine your composition, and tell stronger visual stories. This is hands-on, in-the-field instruction designed to meet you where you are and push your photography further.
We’re also supported by exceptional local guides, whose deep understanding of the land and wildlife ensures we’re always positioned for the best possible encounters — often before the action even starts.
At the end of each day, you’ll return to carefully selected lodges, where professional staff take care of everything else: warm hospitality, delicious meals, and a comfortable space to rest, recharge, and get ready for the next day’s adventure.

EQUIPMENT TO BRING
CAMERA BODY:
Guests are encouraged to bring a camera body with a minimum of 24-megapixels to guarantee the best results while on safari. This should be a mirrorless camera, as these allow for silent shooting - ideal for close, hide photography.
A second camera body is always a great consideration, however, this is not mandatory. This can be used as a backup, or you can keep a second lens attached and switch back and forth between cameras.
LENSES:
24–70mm lens: Excellent for wide-angle perspectives in the hide, capturing unique compositions and dramatic close-range encounters. Great for storytelling, including animals in their environment.
70–200mm lens: Offers flexibility and reach for medium-distance subjects in the hide, allowing you to isolate details, capture behavior, and create stunning portraits with clean backgrounds.
300mm lens (prime or zoom): Highly recommended for photographing smaller species like birds, jackals, or shy mammals that may stay just beyond the closest range. The added reach ensures you don’t miss subtle but beautiful wildlife moments.
